My initial attempt at reselling was a bust

I started out right where you probably are.
I was working full-time as a brand ambassador, constantly on my feet in the grueling sun promoting someone else’s products (all while having to fake a smile and pretend to be cheerful). I felt replaceable—like just another cog in the wheel—and spent my days praying for the clock to tick faster so I could go home.
Until the global pandemic hit and all my work events got cancelled.
I had been busting my butt for these companies—even sacrificing precious family time on the weekends for big events—trying to secure my reputation in the industry.
Then when CO-VID hit, I lost my job—my entire income and livelihood—overnight.
I already had big dreams of working for myself and having the flexibility to make my own schedule doing something that I truly enjoyed. I wanted a way to make money that didn’t put a cap on my income—one that would reflect my efforts and had the potential for serious growth. I had already been selling clothes from my personal closet on Poshmark and had recently begun dabbling in reselling as a fun side-hobby. It turns out that losing my job was the push I needed to take my business full-time.
It became clear to me that I had been entrusting my entire financial stability to an industry that could disappear in the blink of an eye. I promised myself I would never be at the mercy of faceless, corporate brands ever again. So I shifted all of my energy and focus into reselling—figuring out the ropes; working relentlessly on it day and night.
But I had no idea what I was doing when I first started, and my sales were painfully slow as a result. I spent countless hours watching YouTube videos and pouring over other resellers’ Instagram pages, trying to figure out a way to ‘crack the code’ of reselling. I paid hundreds upon hundreds of dollars thrifting inventory that I was certain would sell, only to have it sit for months on end.
I spent so much time and money on things that simply weren’t working. I styled the most attractive, professional-looking photos for my listings. I picked up brands that other resellers swore by. I joined Posh parties, followed other Poshers, and shared their listings into oblivion. I even achieved the coveted “Posh Ambassador” status!
But my bank account was dwindling. I knew if I was going to keep at this, I HAD to learn how to do it RIGHT - and start making money FAST.
BUT from all this failure, I learned how to CONSISTENTLY make sales - with far less time and effort than I had been previously putting in - and the sales started rolling in QUICK!
So why was my reselling business such a flop the first time around?
I made all the rookie mistakes when I started…
1. I wasted time on tasks that weren’t directly resulting in profits
I spent days writing handwritten thank-you notes, sharing my listings to Posh parties, following thousands of Posher’s accounts, and even shared other Posher’s listings until I reached the coveted “5,000 shares” because I thought being a Posh Ambassador would lead to more sales. I didn’t know what was important to focus on and what was unnecessary. I wasted hours upon hours of my life doing pointless work, instead of spending time on activities that would actually drive sales.
2. I tried to copy what other resellers were doing
In my newbie ignorance, I followed a bunch of super ‘successful’ resellers on Instagram, assuming that if I simply memorized the brands they were posting about on social media that I would start making tons of sales like they were! I didn’t realize that just because a brand works for one reseller, doesn’t mean it will work for another. That caused me to make some pretty bad buys at Goodwill. As a result, I spent time steaming, photographing, and listing a bunch of inventory that would either sit forever or never sell.
3. I didn’t know how to create listings that would attract buyers
I used to title my listings with things like “cute dress” and would barely write anything in the listing description. Since I didn’t understand the importance of SEO let alone what the heck to write, I again reverted to looking at other Posher’s listings for inspiration. That led me to waste precious space by including nonsense like “I love offers!” and “Happy Poshing!”. I cringe just thinking about it.
4. I lost out on profits by refusing to invest in anything other than inventory
I’ll admit it—I’m cheap. I get a thrill from thrifting. I love a good deal. But a “cheap” mindset can actually be a massive hinderance to you if you want to grow a successful, booming business. In reselling, you make money by spending money. I fooled myself into thinking that I was “saving money” by only spending on inventory and seeking out free reselling content on the Internet. But the best entrepreneurs understand that time IS money. It was only once I started investing in my knowledge that I truly began to understand this concept on a deeper level and finally started to see my business REALLY take off. Not to mention—educational purchases for your biz are tax write-off! ;-)
5. I was working (a lot!) harder, not smarter
Who doesn’t want that highly sought-after work/life balance? That was one of the biggest attractors that lured me into reselling. Work for myself? The flexibility to make my own schedule? Sign me up! What I didn’t realize was: without the right systems in place, you can actually end up working MORE when you work for yourself than at a corporate 9-to-5. That’s how I used to feel before I finally figured out the exact steps that would make my business operate at optimum efficiency. Now it (almost!) feels like it runs itself on autopilot.

Will I have to purchase anything else once I buy the course?
There are a few programs that I will highly recommend to make the most money from your blog, most of which have a free trial period (I started making money on my blog before the free trials ran out!) But the only thing you MUST have is a Squarespace membership. The basic plan starts at $12 a month, and is WELL worth the investment.
For comparison, to use a hosting service + Wordpress, the hosting service is only about $3-5 a month, but you have to pay for at least a year upfront ($60-$108), and still have to buy a nice Wordpress theme ($100+) and install it yourself. This is more money out of pocket at the start, which I personally didn’t have. (And Wordpress is complicated as heck.)
