Start Selling on Poshmark: How to Turn Your Clothes into Cash

Did you know you can make money cleaning out your closet—like, good money?

What if I told you that clearing out my closet changed my life?

Before I discovered Poshmark, I had no idea there were people who would pay good money for my used clothes.

I was a broke, overworked Starbucks barista with no energy or money.

Like countless others, I was trapped in a cycle of being highly overworked and grossly underpaid. But how do you free yourself from a life of misery? I wanted SO badly to change my circumstance, but I didn’t know where to start.

I was working minimum wage, barely making enough money to even SURVIVE. On top of that, I didn’t have a college degree. So I couldn’t just go out and “get a higher paying job” the same way a university grad could. I felt trapped—hopeless—like I’d be in survival mode for the rest of my life.

But by some stroke of luck, I stumbled upon Poshmark, an app for buying and selling new and secondhand clothes. I downloaded it on the recommendation of my mom (thanks, mom!) back in 2014, but didn’t actually list anything for two years because I was so skeptical that anyone would want to buy my used clothes on the Internet.

Luckily, in 2016 I pushed past my limiting beliefs and spent an afternoon taking photos of my clothes and uploading them to Poshmark. I had zero expectations, but figured—what did I have to lose?

It took an entire month before I made my first sale. But still, it was exciting—especially when that little chunk of change hit my bank account! After that, I was hooked. To be transparent, my first few years selling on Poshmark were pretty mediocre. But heck—making a little extra money on the side was better than having clothes I wasn’t wearing taking up space in my closet!

In 2016, I made $417

In 2017, I made $433

In 2018, I made $215

It was something, but nothing spectacular. I knew there had to be a way to make more sales—and even faster. I was determined to figure out what made Poshmark tick. I must have had a lot of stamina at the time because it took me three and a half years to figure this shit out.

3.5 years of researching and scouring the Internet.

3.5 years of trial and error.

3.5 years of small wins, failing, and trying again.

But in 2019, I finally cracked the code, bringing in $8,015 in sales—an increase of about 3,700%.

It didn’t stop there. When I ran out of items from my own personal closet, I began sourcing clothes from friends, family, local thrift shops, and Goodwill.

By 2020, I was averaging $2,500 a month on Poshmark (in the middle of a global pandemic, no less!). I went from being broke and overworked to finally having the money to live life on my terms.

To date, I’ve made $75,517.92 on Poshmark. But more importantly, I’ve gained my freedom back—and the confidence to believe in myself. Now, I’m someone who actually enjoys life, makes her own hours, and (gasp!) even takes vacations. Once you realize what is truly possible, you can’t unsee it.

I want the same for you. That’s why today, I’m going to show you just how easy it is to get started selling on Poshmark. If you have clothes you no longer wear that are just collecting dust in the back of your closet, keep reading because you could start turning those clothes into cold hard cash!

How To Make Money Clearing Out Your Closet

BROWSE YOUR CLOSET FOR CLOTHES TO SELL

Go into your closet and determine which items you no longer wear. Place them in a pile on your bed. Next, carefully examine each item for flaws (stains, rips, fading, stretch marks, etc.) and place any item with significant damage/wear into a separate pile to donate or recycle. The remaining items (that are still in good condition) are the clothes you will list!

PHOTOGRAPH YOUR CLOTHES

Grab your smartphone (nope—you don’t need a fancy professional camera for this!) and find the nearest neutral door or wall that’s well-lit. I prefer natural light as artificial light can look a bit dingy and yellow. Grab a hanger and hang your item on the white door or wall (command hooks work great for this!) and get snapping. You can upload up to 16 photos (and one short video) per listing, so take advantage of that. Show all angles—yes, that includes any small flaws!

Pro tip: shoot in square mode as Poshmark will automatically crop all of your photos into a square. You don’t want anything getting accidentally cut out!

CREATE AND PUBLISH A LISTING

When you open Poshmark, the first page you’ll see is your Feed

  1. Click the camera “Sell” icon located smack dab in the middle of the navigation bar at the bottom of your screen.

  2. Click the landscape icon in the lower left hand corner. Select all the photos you wish to include in your listing (you’ll know they're selected because there will be a blue checkmark in the lower right hand corner of each photo).

  3. Click “Add” in the upper right hand corner. This will bring you to a screen that prompts you to crop your photos. If you already shot your photos in square mode, skip this step by simply clicking “Next” in the upper right hand corner.

  4. The following screen will give you the option to select your covershot. Choose the best, most attractive photo that really showcases your item! This is the first impression your potential buyers will see.

  5. After that, click “Next” and the app will bring you to a screen titled “Edit” where you can add filters. I highly discourage adding any filters as it can warp the colors. Instead, I recommend skipping this step and just clicking that “Next” button.

This should bring you to a page where you can write your listing Title and Description. My advice is to be as descriptive as possible—the more relevant words you can include, the better.

Not sure what to write in your Title or Description? Grab my handy dandy Repeatable Title Formula and Repeatable Description Formula that I use to attract buyers to my listings.

Fill out the remaining fields accordingly (category, quantity, size, etc.) and set your price.

Pro tip: If you’re not sure what you originally paid for the item, you can either guesstimate or simply type the number “0” next to the field labeled “Original Price”. This is pretty standard practice on Poshmark—buyers won’t think anything of it!

Want to take the guesswork out of pricing your items? My Posh To Profit Pricing Equation makes it quick and easy to price your items competitively for a quicker sale. Grab it here.

Once you’ve finished pricing your item, you’re ready to hit Publish!

SHARE, SHARE, SHARE!

If you’re just getting started on Poshmark, you may not be aware that “sharing” is an integral part of getting your items seen on the app. The more eyes you get on your items, the more likely you are to make a sale! To “share” an item from your closet, simply click the circulating arrows icon located in the lower right hand corner of every listing.

I recommend sharing your closet at least 3x per day. Sharing your closet whenever you have downtime is a great habit to get into.
